The Invisible Man: How the Sex Offender Registry Results in "Social Death"
Worth asking, of course, is if the Social Death suffered by those forced to register as sex offfenders is an intended or unintended effect. If "intended" as I think it obviously is, then studies demonstrating "social death" will be greeted by most Americans as an affirmation of current draconian policies.

Riverside County to consider restricting sex offenders’ Halloween activities
This Halloween scare-ritual, the specter of registered sex offenders handing out candy and displaying jack-o-lanterns, is played out year-after-year, as reliably as the appearance of pretend witches and goblins. It doesn't matter that there is no substance to the fear; that isn't the point. The point is to tell scary stories and to experience the thrill that comes with their telling. After all, who doesn't enjoy a good ghost story!

Revisiting last years Comstock decision:

The Trouble with Comstock

"How do we get from the power of Congress to regulate interstate commerce, which was designed to ensure a free market in goods among the States, to this 1977 act for the protection of children against sexual exploitation? This is a perfect example of how the Commerce Clause has been expanded way beyond its original purpose and understanding. The Federal Government cannot do that under a proper reading of the Constitution. Thus does the Commerce Clause, in conjunction with the Necessary and Proper Clause, become in effect a general police power of a kind that was reserved to the states—
and with that, a Constitution of limited government evolves into its opposite.

Mandatory life (with parole) sentence for "lewdness with child under 14" before Nevada Supreme Court

“Michelle Lyn Taylor, 34, was convicted under Nevada’s “life-for-lewdness” law in November 2009 for drunkenly forcing a 13-year-old boy to touch her breast and demanding (unsuccessfully) that the boy engage in sex. Neither the judge, nor one of the original legislative sponsors of the lewdness law, felt the punishment fit the crime. Still, the existence of the mandatory minimum law forced the court to sentence Taylor to life in prison with possibility for parole in 10 years.”

Sex offenders protest 'violent predator' designation

The long and the short of it is: California is running out of room for civilly committing sex offenders. Their solution? Keep all the same guys in their state facility forever but deny that new offenders just getting out of prison are "violent" sex offenders.

Of course, actual "violence" is not necessary to be considered "sexually violent" as discussed here previously. Since "sexual violence" is whatever they say it is, they can now decide that none of the newly released prisoners are "violent". The advantage, apparently, in not springing some of the old residents of Coalinga State Hospital loose after spending years there in order to make room for some new guys who might benefit from their "treatment" is that they don't have the custody problems of having to get used to a new crowd. If this doesn't quite make sense, welcome to California justice.

http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/state&id=8363130

Plan to create sex offender village runs into a bit of community resistance.

So, let's see: the community doesn't want sex offenders living in cities but also doesn't want them living in the countryside. They definitely don't want them living near schools or parks but they also don't want them living under bridges or in motels at the edge of town. They don't want them living by themselves but they also don't want them living in groups, either.

They don't want sex offenders to live in their communities but they won't stand for sex offenders forming their own communities elsewhere.

I think that the real take-home message is that they just don't want sex offenders to live anywhere. You know, kind of like Jews in 1930's Germany.

Two appear in court after paedophile disemboweled in cell.

Does casting out sex offenders encourage them to offend again?

Perhaps not, but sooner or later the public is going to piss off the wrong people with their continued witchhunt.

35 doctors, nurses, health care workers lose licenses for past sex offenses.

Doesn't it occur to those advocating the extreme marginalization of sex offenders that there are wide-ranging social consequences for this marginalization? In this case, it is having 35 fewer health care practitioners to serve the community.
