It
appears that, in his quest for political rehabilitation, Elliot
Spitzer has sublimated his obsession for hookers with an
obsession for history, going back nearly eighteen years to dig up some
'dirt' on his opponent, Mr. Stringer. The dirt? Mr. Spitzer
implies that because Mr. Springer voted all those years ago not to
discorporate a spin-off corporation of ours called Zymurgy he supports
NAMBLA.
Now most of us are not New Yorkers, nor do we care
in the slightest about the race for city comptroller. But it seems to
us that if Mr.Spitzer's campaign has to spread misinformation about
events that happened so long ago, he is growing desperate.
Let's
clear something up - Zymurgy was incorporated as a not-for-profit
organization, but this is NOT the same as a tax exempt organization. It
was never envisioned to be, and never attempted to be tax exempt. It
was created as a spin-off organization to make it easier for us to sell
scholarly books and tapes. We made some mistakes along the way (as
small, all-volunteer groups sometimes do) but there was nothing
nefarious nor illegal about what we did and why we did it. This was
borne out by the fact that the New York legislature voted Zymurgy
out of existence because there was nothing they could take us to court
for.
It is abundantly clear that Mr. Spitzer is trying to use
this to deflect criticism regarding his hypocritical breach of his
professed moral standards, but reaching back to something that happened
during the Clinton era hardly seems relevant to the issues of today's
NYC race except to demonstrate his continuing lack of character.
